If there’s one team that should miss the playoffs, that team shouldn’t be the Alaska Aces.
I know I haven’t been rooting for them ever since the team lost the likes of Johnny Abarrientos, Bong Hawkins, Jojo Lastimosa, Poch Juinio, Rodney Santos, and either/or Kenneth Duremdes and Jeffrey Cariaso but it felt as if Alex Compton and his boys are hellbent to continue their winning tradition.
So who would think Alaska would lose nearly two-thirds of their regular season and crash out of the playoffs in the most sickening of circumstances?
For one thing – I thought with the constant injuries and absences of their top players like Calvin Abueva, Vic Manuel, JV Casio, and Chris Banchero, they should have kept Cyrus Baguio and RJ Jazul. I know Simon Enciso is a diamond in the rough and I guess they need Jazul to part to develop Banchero but they terribly missed these guys when their stars piled up on their DNPs. I also thought they could have subbed Cory Jefferson out especially when the consecutive loss count increased to five. It’s not like Jefferson is piling Norman Black-like numbers for both points and rebounds.
Wait… is Alaska reverting back to their cheapskate mode because here’s the thing – while Manuel and Casio have value, they are also injury prone. I like to believe they can send one of these guys to teams that would give up a good player in order to develop their other player. For example, I think Jio Jalalon could gain more minutes if the Star Hotshots could give up Mark Barroca. Or perhaps this is the right time to separate Mo Tautuaa from Troy Rosario? At the moment the 2017 PBA Draft is shallow from the fourth pick and beyond but this is also the year that the Aces could score a draft stud.
Maybe there’s a chance for them to score on Jeron Teng?
Anyway, check out their stats.
