2017 PBA Commissioner’s Cup: GlobalPort Batang Pier stats

Remember that saliva thing Terrence Romeo did to Kiefer Ravena some years back?

Well it’s not that gross… but he pissed another Ateneo guard in the process.

So after taking the PBL world by storm as the Harbour Centre Port Masters and lording the inaugural ABL season as the Philippine Patriots, Mikee Romero has yet to win a title in the PBA. So I guess the roadblock that is the Barangay Ginebra Kings made Romeo as well as his wards to lose their cool… but it’s not like they didn’t improve their winning ways this season.

With the proper import, I expect the Batang Pier to rise in the rankings especially with the additions of Sean Anthony, Bradwyn Guinto, and Jonathan Grey. Of course, the Slash Brothers of Romeo and Stanley Pringle will lead their scoring parade… but at least they will have better secondary options.

I know GlobalPort’s offense revolves heavily on Romeo and Pringle but it feels as if everyone else in their team have turned gun shy. With Romeo and Pringle as well as import Justin Harper getting at least 65 points per game, you see supposed big game vets like Billy Mamaril, Mick Pennisi, and Rico Maierhofer score less than two points per game. Mike Cortez is their third leading local scorer and he just enters the court when one of the Slash Brothers rest.

Again inasmuch as they got a goldmine in Sean Anthony, they should try sniping for Asi Taulava. Romeo got riled up during that Ginebra matchup because not only is LA Tenorio an underrated defender, but perhaps the euphoria of winning has gone into Bro’s head. Even if SEABA is not at par with most international tourneys, it’s easy for a player to enjoy top dog status. For years, GlobalPort has searched for their golden boy and for years the players they acquire would win titles… after they move to other teams (with the exception of Gary David). Perhaps this is the right time for Romeo to claim a big man just like what Mark Caguioa and Jayjay Helterbrand had with Eric Menk during the 2000s. Inasmuch as we value the careers of one-team players, the league wouldn’t regard team loyalty in the same breath as championships or individual accolades and such.

I am a huge Asi Taulava mark and I thought his partnership with Anthony and Franz Pumaren revived his career.

Part Two should be in the offing.

Anyway, here are the stats of the GlobalPort squad.
